Bishop in Kenya Calls on Catholic Communicators to Revisit and Spread Pope’s November Message to Kenyans

Catholic communicators in Kenya have been challenged to spread far and wide the message of Pope Francis during his pastoral visit to the country last November and to constantly remind the leaders to follow the advice of the Holy Father in ensuring that Kenya is a nation that cares for humanity and nature.
The challenge came from the Chairman of the Commission for Social Communications of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), Bishop Joseph Obanyi of Kakamega diocese.
Addressing diocesan communication coordinators, Catholic radio managers and Catholic publication editors in Kakamega last week, Bishop Obanyi encouraged the communicators to revisit and to communicate about the impact of Pope Francis message in the lives of Kenyans during his pastoral visit.
“Find out what is going on, are the people becoming more aware and talking boldly about issues like corruption?” Bishop Obanyi urged Catholic communicators to inquire among Kenyans.
He called on the Catholic Media to be more proactive as the political temperatures rise towards the general elections scheduled to take place in August 2017 saying, “Be ahead of situations that may arise whether positive or negative and counter the bad with good.”
The Bishop reminded the communicators of their vitally important responsibility to boldly talk about issues affecting the country, echoing the words of Pope Francis to the consecrated persons, “wake up to wake up the world.”
He called on the Catholic media in Kenya to journey with the secular media in ensuring that both religious and political leaders maintain peace and tranquility.
He went on to advocate for synergy among Catholic Radios in Kenya in their day to day running of programs saying, “You should have the sense of solidarity and sharing of common programs. Get a chance to meet and coordinate for common programs, exchange programs and views for unity and harmony as you inform, educate, entertain and evangelize the people.”
The weeklong meeting was held from March 7 – 11 and was coordinated by KCCB’s Waumini Communications, overseen by the Managing Director, David Omwoyo, with over 30 participants from different dioceses and Catholic radio stations in attendance.
